Learner Outcomes

Students will practice communication skills through writing, reading, and speaking. Research and technology skills will be enhanced through internet and written research. Students will experience a greater understanding of other regions and cultures of the United States.

Methods and Activities

The teacher will explain to the class that a project will be done with students from another school. The class will receive artifacts from the mystery school. Students will determine the region/state of origin for the artifact in question and why the artifacts are meaninful to that region.

The teacher will recieve the artifacts in the mail. The teacher will organize the students into collaborative learning groups to determine what area of the country the artifact came from.

The objective will be for each group to find the region of the country the artifact comes from. More specifically, the students will identify the 'mystery' state. Students will use the internet, encyclopedias, maps and any other reference materials they feel necessary. A report describing the object will be made after the object research is completed. This report may be an outline, picture, written report or webs/diagrams describing how the object is used and details about its importance to the area of origin.

Post conference activities will include discussing the different artifacts after meeting with the home school via video conference. What differences and similarities did the children notice about the artifacts received and the ones that were sent to the other school? The learners will write a report to turn in for a grade summarizing what they learned from this experience. Describe the methods and activities for the project.

Great idea here! What kinds of artifacts are you encouraging kids to send? Who pays for postage? How big can the artifacts be? How obscure? What will be considered appropriate or inappropriate? For example: Some kids mind-sets today may think it's funny to send an artifcat from Dad's Hunting Trip in Michigan that may be considered "gross" by some kids. Am I reading too much into this?
