Comparison/Contrast of Famous Missourians/Texans

As both of our state level standards, 4th graders are required to research and relate the contributions of famous statespersons to local and national heritage. As part of a global connection to national heritage, teachers from Texas and Missouri can compare and contrast the contributions through project preparation and video conferencing.

Project time frame

A two week research timeline is proposed as a pre-conference activity in individual classes. The entire videoconference, held mid-second week of the project, could take 50 minutes, depending on number of participants. Three sessions throughout the school year will be available for participation - 1) 10/1/2006; 2) 3/1/2007; or 3) 5/1/2007.

Implementation Timeline: Advertisement to be sent out at the beginning of the school year and again a month before the videoconference (contact Kelly Stovall at kelly.stovall@tisd.org to receive an advertisement). Teachers need to sign up at least three weeks prior to the event, if possible. Confirmations will be emailed to participating teachers two weeks prior to the event, with test connection calls being made one week before the videoconference.

Conference pre-activities need to be finished at the beginning of the two week period prior to the conference. The conference will be held mid-second week of the project. Post-conference activities should be completed within the end of the second week of the project (about a half-week after the conference has taken place). Conference presentations evaluation reminders will be sent to teachers one week after the conference has taken place, and evaluations should be returned within one month of completing the project.

How to sign up

Participation is limited to two classes per state. Registration will be handled first -come, first-serve. To inquire about registration, contact Kelly Stovall at kelly.stovall@tisd.org or download this linked advertisement (uses the program Acrobat Reader).

Teachers will need to email Kelly with their names/email/school name and district along with their technical advisor's contact name, email and phone number, and sessions desired. Two weeks before the event, teachers will receive a confirmation along with pre and post conference activity guidelines and project scoring rubrics.

IP or ISDN?

Since this will be a multi-point videoconference opportunity, the site will determine which type of connection will be used.

Methods and Activities

Teaching strategies: Role-play famous Missourians and Texans, emphasizing contributions to our state and national heritage.

Pre-Conference: Students will be given a KWL graphic organizer/template from which to glean their information. Students will be required to be broken into small groups (configuration is up to the teacher - enough so that all the groups have 3-5 minutes to present).

During the conference: Students will role play the significant contributions of these statespersons in groups of 4-5.

Post Conference: Students will fill out and share (using Smart Technology for those who have it) a Venn diagram processing the comparison/contrast. Site facilitators will need to fill out a Videoconference Presentation Evaluation to be returned within a month of the conference's completion.

Materials

Lists of persons to research are the responsibility of the individual teacher.

Videoconference Details

Time: One class period (about 50-60 minutes).

Responsibilities: Teachers will need to facilitate group work pre-conference. Remember to go over rules and behavior since skits can easily lag and get out of hand. Each site facilitator will need to make sure they make their students aware of the graphic organizers/templates used.

Video Conference Agenda

Two-week (10 Day) Project

Day One: Begin KWL/Research Template about persons selected to research (one group selects one person).

Day Two-Six: Research your statesperson and prepare a skit for presentation.

Day Eight: Video Conference --

40 minute group presentation: (3-5 minutes each for 8 presentations - 4 from each school); 5 minute group question time; 10 minutes comparing and contrasting the two states. Post Conference Activity - Using the SmartBoard and/or a Venn Diagram graphic organizer, compare and contrast the local contributions with national contributions.
