Learner Outcomes

Students will be able to recognize the relevance of math in everyday situations.

Using favorite literature, students will solve math problems based on the theme of the story.

Methods and Activities

The host teacher will refer to the book "One Grain of Rice" by highlighting the character's solution to feeding her people. The solution began with one grain of rice, which doubled and doubled and doubled some more. Questions posed to the students may include:

1. 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128...respectively, are the numbers that represent the grains of rice Rani received each day until the raja ran out of rice. What is the relationship among these numbers? If we were to continue doubling the rice by the number of grains would Rani receive 977 grains of rice in one of the thirty days? Why or why not?

2. Six basketball teams plan a tournament in which each team plays each other team once. How many games will be played?

3. Your principal wants to hire you to work for her ten days. She will pay you either $6.00 each day for all ten days; or $1.00 the first day, $2 the second, $3 the third, and so on; or $.10 for the first day and each day thereafter twice the amount of the day before. In which way would you earn the most money? In which way would you earn the least?
