Learner OutcomesBased on Michigan GLCE and Texas TAKS
Methods and ActivitiesThis VC will need a Monitor/Facilitator at host site and both sites will need a teacher/adult to control camera/mic remote. Prior to game day the host school will email out the answer sheets. Teacher should make 2 copies of the answer set (one for teacher and 1 set to be split among the student teams). Teacher should divide the CLASS into nine small Teams. Game questions have been emailed to participating schools. Allow no more than ½ hour for Teams to complete the questions. Be sure to remind them to write their response on the back of the sheet large enough to be seen by the camera. Calculators are NOT to be used. During game play, seat the teams together.
VC DIRECTIONS: MATH MANIA Prior to Game Play (this will not be video cast) Teacher divides CLASS (Students choose a creative class name like Math Maniacs, Super Stars, Human Calculators) into nine small groups and distributes 3 questions to each TEAM. (Questions have previously been emailed.) Each TEAM solves their 3 questions and writes the answer on the back of the sheet large enough for the camera to pick up during the Game Play. Designate a reader, writer, responder (the responder should rotate through the 3 rounds of game play) but all students collaborate to solve the questions. The writer and the reader are maintained during the question answering session. Calculators are NOT to be used. The TEAM must unanimously agree on the answers for their questions. Allow no more than ½ hour to complete the questions. During Game Play seat Teams together in A-I order to facilitate square choosing.
Game Play: After a brief welcoming introduction by the VC Monitor/Facilitator game play will commence. __Round One: __At the toss of coin it will be determined by VC Monitor/facilitator which CLASS gets to go first. The opposing TEAM may choose whether they want to be X or O. Rotate through the TEAMS (A-I) responder choosing a square hence the VC Monitor/facilitator reads the question aloud. It is the responsibility of the TEAM responder to recognize the question and respond orally and show the written response. The Video Conferencing Monitor/facilitator determines whether the response is correct or incorrect. If the answer is correct, CLASS gets the spot, if the answer is incorrect the question goes to the other CLASS. They respond in kind either earning the spot or leaving it vacant. The other Class chooses the next square regardless of who earned the spot. Play continues (rotating through B-I) until a tic-tac-toe is made. If the CAT wins the game, the CLASS with the most X or Os wins.
__Round Two: __Opposing CLASS gets to go first. Rotate Team roles so a different student is assigned as responder. Again rotate through the teams where responder chooses a square and the question is read. Again it is the responsibility of the TEAM responder to recognize the question and respond both verbally and with the written response. If spot is not earned, question goes to opposing TEAM. Opposing Class chooses the next square. Play continues until a tic-tac-toe is made. If the CAT wins the game, the CLASS with the most X or Os wins. Round Three: Again rotate the role or Team Responder. Continue to rotate through the Teams where a responder chooses a square and the question is read. Again it is the responsibility of the TEAM responder to recognize the question and respond both verbally and with the written response. If spot is not earned, question goes to opposing TEAM. Opposing Class chooses the next square. Play continues until a tic-tac-toe is made. If CAT wins the game, the CLASS with the most X or Os wins. Game Winner is the CLASS who earned the majority of Tic-Tac-Toes rounds.
At conclusion of game allow time for Teams to reflect spontaneously. Assessment/Evaluation: Using MOODLE students will share observations on the game process, questions they found the most challenging, what they liked the best about the game. Teachers will share their observations on the learning and game process.
MaterialsPower Point, laptops, video-conferencing equipment, email and access to a printer.
Videoconference Details.Time: 30 minutes to complete questions prior to the video conference, 30-40 minutes to play the game
Responsibilities: Students will work cooperatively in groups of 3-4 to answer questions and write answers on the back large enough for the camera to view. Teacher will divide classroom into 9 groups. The teacher will receive the emailed questions, and schedule 1/2 hour for the groups to do the computation.
Agenda: The site Monitor/facilitator will email questions to participants. The M/F will maintain structure during the video conference game.
